It is an informal way of emphasising the size of something. In my opinion it is slightly different from the "Wow, that's cool!" (= awesome, excellent, etc.) usage.

Thank you AlpheccaStars and GPY, I think I now understand the meaning. Is it interchangeable with "whopping"? This is a word I know.
