'cooking them safe' vs. 'cooking them safely'

The following is a question in a test.

*Their chefs have been cooking them [safe/ safely] for centuries.

It says the answer of the questions is 'safely.'
But I don't see why we can't use 'safe.'
Can you give me any good explanation about this?

I agree with GG in this case. However:

I'd say that safe can be an adverb too, but it's a bit informal in that usage:
