Cooking in US/Canada

Hi guys again,
I just finished a translation of another episode of one cooking TV show from Canada. Piece of cake, except of one thing, Anna Olson, the guest in that show, was making there "sweet onion dip" served alongside with veggies. It looked really sweet Emotion: smile, but there is problem, in my native language, we don't have an synonym for the worddip, really, however please, may I call it just spread? Are you guys from Canada/US using it for dips sometimes?
many thanks in advance
Best Regards

You could call it a spread, although that would imply that you're supposed to spread it on the vegetables rather than dipping them into it. Usually we would dip vegetable or potato chips (crisps) into it.

By the way -- did you realize that the "sweet onion dip" is probably not actually sweet? It's probably made with "sweet onions", which are not as strong as most onions.

Yeah, Anna was referring to it.

Well, they're sweet compared to other onions, but not compared to an apple!
