Cooking food at home
I have a significant interest in cooking food at home. According to me, cooking as an activity is not simply about preparing food which one can eat but it has many sides to it. In this essay I will describe some of the aspects of cooking that I enjoy.
I find cooking to be a great stress reliever. Each time I cook and prepare a dish I get a sense of achievement and satisfaction. This is because a dish is something you create by your own work and creativity, and any such activity gives pleasure. Cooking is also very scientific. Often I experiment with new ingredients to see how the end product comes out to be. Sometimes the end product I good and sometimes it ends in a disaster, but over a period of time one gets an understanding of what combination of ingredients will work. There is also science involved in preparing and cooking the ingredients of a dish. For example, if one is preparing meat rice, one need to have an understanding of the time the meat should be marinated, and the temperature and pressure on which the meal should be prepared. If the temperature and pressure at the time of cooking are not right then the taste of the dish does not come out well. I also use cooking to learn about other cultures. Preparing dishes which have originated in other countries gives you an idea of the tastes people of that country might have, the sort of ingredients that is are available in that country. Cooking is also a great social binder. I sometimes cook with friends and family. Everybody works together in a group towards a common goal, and contributes in their own way to preparing the dish. In my view, cooking in a group increases the bonding between people. There is always something new to explore when cooking. One dish can be prepared in many ways, and there are a large number of dishes that I have never tried cooking. In my view one can never get bored of cooking.

"Media violence has a negative effect."
The amount of violence portrayed in all forms of media all over the world has been on the rise over the last few years. This pattern has been apparent in all forms of media including print, audio and visual. Examples of violence in print media is newspapers and books include stories about events like riots, murders, beatings, drugs wars, civil wars, wars between countries, terrorist attacks, mafia wars. Violence portrayed in the audio media radio and music comes in the form of audio articles about the violent events mentioned previously and in the form of songs sometimes gangster rap songs. Finally, violence portrayed in the visual media television and movies comes in the form of stories or coverage of the violent events mentioned previously. Media violence has a negative effect on people. It is common to see impressionable groups within our society indulging in actions influenced by the violence in media. Media reflects what goes around in the society and the society is influenced by what goes around in the media. However, the scale of violence coverage in media is something to be questioned as it appears to be showing a lot more violence compared to the vast array of activities that go on in a society.
In my view, the enhanced coverage of violence in the media is driven by corporate greed because violence sells more than non-violence. Media is an important institution our society and people spend a fair bit of their time accessing media. Therefore, it is very important for the media to be responsible in what they report. A more balanced reporting which is reflective of what actually goes on in our society is the answer. We as everyday people do not spend 90% of our time indulging in violent activities and the media coverage should be reflective of this. If the media houses do not do this voluntarily then the respective governments/heads of countries should put in appropriate regulations in place. The large proportion of people in the society who are impressionable should be protected from the negative effects of the media.
