Boiling is only a particular way of cooking, and I'd use "boil" only when a certain type of food is cooked by putting it in water that is boiling (which doesn't happen with risotto, paella, pilaff etc.).

If you boil rice, what you get is mushy stuff. Boil implies a lot of water. What you cook will be submerged in the water. You boil spaghetti. I think you can say cook spaghetti as cook encompasses boil like Tanit said.

Tanit, what's risotto? Italian? It sounds like it and also sounds delicious.

Yes, it is a traditional Italian dish, and I'm very fond of it. Actually, I'm also quite good at preparing various types of risotto (my favourite: with mushrooms, with courgettes, with seafood, with saffron and parmesan cheese.)

I like ravioli, spagetti and other pastas. I'm sure I've heard of risotto and perhaps had it too. But a Google image search didn't return anything familiar. It's a type of rice? Next time I go grocery shopping, I'll look for it. What color is it? Does it look like rice? thin long grains?
