Convincing noise

In the context of talking about morality and keeping up appearances, what does "convincing noises" and making of the noises mean? Does it just mean lies and other uttering ways of protecting one's facade?

Cheers.

I think you have it right. Perhaps, " maintaining one's facade," but protecting is okay. , BTW, but it may be a bit too restrictive.

Interesting use of PP (uttering) as adj., BTW, but it may be a bit too restrictive. I've sometimes heard "making noises" used to describe disturbances of a silent and non verbal nature.

Edit. I'd think of it as something like "stage business." That is, realistic, but unreal.
