What do you call the extra space at the end of checkout counters where the shop assistant lays down the things you buy before you put them in your bag?

I think you can generically call that a deck. A quick web search reveals "rear deck" and "basin" as two of the words used in the trade, a basin being more depressed, I guess. It is the bagging area, too, in terms of function.
