Converting Direct Speech to Reported Speech

Hi. I need to know how to convert a present continuous sentence, in direct speech to reported speech.

Sarah said, "My father takes me to school every day."

Is the reported form

Sarah said that her father takes her to school every day.

or

Sarah said that her father took her to school every day.

Is there any rule why the sentence is converted so?
