Conversation 2

A: Our history homework was really difficult, wasn’t it?
B: It sure was. ( )

a. It required much more than before.
b. It was not as hard as I imagined.
c. It took a lot longer than I thought.
d. It seemed to be unacceptable.
e. It was the most I ever struggled with.

The answer is 'c', but why not 'a' or 'e'?

I'm a native English speaker in the US, and I tried answering this without looking at the answer, and I got it wrong. After narrowing it down to a, c, or e, I picked e. b and d are eliminated right from the start.

Apparently e is not the answer because the phrase "the most I ever struggled with" seems ambiguous.

The Question does not mention any previous homework, so it cannot be compared with anything unknown. The only answer that provides a measure of unusual difficulty is c. (It took longer than expected.)
