I overheard the conversation between Mary and James about them getting a divorce.

I overheard Mary and James' conversation about them getting a divorce.

Are both idiomatic?

Thanks

Sort of. You will hear things like this.

"their" getting a divorce is standard, and I would write "James's"

More natural in the second one is "I overheard Mary and James talking about getting a divorce."

I agree with GG. The most natural and idiomatic way of expressing that thought is:

I overheard Mary and James talking about getting a divorce.
