Controversial sentence

Dear all,

I have been told by a native speaker (I myself am not one) that the sentence below is incorrect. It is part of a statement of a physics problem, so don't mind the jergon.

<< Give a qualitative explanation as to why the ground state is for L = 0. >>

He was not able to tell me exactly what is wrong about it, but that there is indeed something wrong with it.

I would really appreciate your input, since I find the sentence very clear and grammatically correct.

Thank you so much in advance,

Joseba

Well, unfortunately, we may have to know the jargon in order to be sure, but I suggest that it should read like this: Give a qualitative explanation as to why the ground state is L = 0.

Thanks for the answer.

You are right, the jergon somehow makes a difference, so I should explain. L=0 is not the ground state. Rather, it is a property of the ground state.

The following version must be correct (right?):

Give a qualitative explanation as to why the ground state is for the case that L = 0.

What I would like to understand is if there

Hello, Jose—and thanks for registering at English Forums.

Well then, I suggest that the dependency has been reversed in the original sentence and that it should read like this:

Give a qualitative explanation as to why L=0 is for the ground state.

That would make your alternative sentence reversed also:

Give a qualitative explanation as to why
0
Ok, I see.

And is there anything grammatically wrong in the original sentence?

Grammatically? I suppose not, but it carries the wrong meaning. Would you say that there's any grammar mistake in the foillowing sentence?—

The newspaper ate my dog and they're green.

This seems okay. This is for L = 0. You could have sentences like:

Give a qualitative explanation as to why the ground state is for L = 1.

or

Give a qualitative explanation as to why the ground state is for L = 2.

Etc.

No, those are just the same as the original. Same problem.
