Contribute - cause goals

"......factors contributing to these goals."

"......factors contributing to the achievement of these goals."

Sometimes I see people use the verb 'contribute' in the manner it is used in the first sentence. I always find this usage somewhat uncomfortable, because 'contribute' here really means 'cause' and you don't 'cause' goals, you only cause the realization or the fullfillment of them. So I am thinking that perhaps in formal writing the second sentence would be preferred. Any ideas?
