contrary/opposing opinions

Hello,
Which adjective would you use here:
- He and his wife had contrary/opposing opinions on the issue.
I think both can be used, but what are the differences between them in your opinion?

You can use both and there is not a great deal of difference in meaning. However, contrary suggests exact opposite. You think George is a genius I think he is an idiot.
