Are the following sentences acceptable?

1. What's it?

Dear sir,

«What's it?» is not an acceptable sentence. But you may say «What is it?»

«That's it.» is an acceptable sentence.

I agree with Goldmund -- "What's it?" by itself is not used. However, you can use "what's it...." if something follows, such as "What's its about? What's it for? What's it doing?"
