I disagree with the answer given. Past tense verbs can be contracted, for example:
Ten years ago I spent 5 months in Paris. It was the best time I ever had./It's (pronounced the same as "it's," or as: "idzz") the best time I ever had.
The couple with the 3 kids? They were here, but left./They're (pronounced the same as "they're," or as: "they-urr") here, but left.
