Contraction

Hello,

English language has many forms such as spoken English(formal , informal ?), written English (formal, informal).
I am non-native learner and also not able to understand these terms very well.

The dictionaries are the only books which actually categories the words or the sentences in to different class (spoken/written-formal-informal).

So according to English grammar books and dictionaries,we should not use contracted forms such can't, aren't etc
while we are writing, these are used in spoken English.
But the books(math , physics, chemistry etc) which we refer in our schools/colleges have these contracted form in them, even in English literature books.

On this forum, I have seen many native speaker using the contracted forms in their writing.

Shall I use contracted form of these words while I am writing answers in exam?

Thanks
