Letter Writing

Contracted forms

Hi,

I realize that we don't use contracted forms in formal letters except these: don't,doesn't,didn't.
Why is it so?
Is that because of their prominence in the context?
And do we have other exceptions like the above mentioned ones?

Thank you in advance,

Iman
