Contracted form

Hi!

Please, may I use the contracted form with the past continuous tense? E.g. She's coming home when she witnessed a murder.

Thank you!
Danny

Hi -

No, "She's" does not work with "She was." It can be "She is" or "She has" (and context will tell you which one) but not "She was."

Hi,
No. She was coming home.

However, note that we sometimes 'tell a story' by using Present tense. Thus, in casual speech, you might hear

Did you hear about Mary last night? She's going home and she sees a murder!'

Most students of English are glad to know that the past tense never occurs in contracted form. There are no contractions with was and were.
