It is possible in a poetical way ("continuer" is a nonce word), but I can't say I know exactly what it is supposed to mean. Maybe "She had promised him to carry on his work." or "She had promised him to pick up where he left off."

He was defending his country and then he was martyred. Before his martyrdom he had asked his wife to continue his path which was defending from the country.
