''Continue'' and''survive''

Hi,

I would like to know about the proper usage of the above words

a)He continued working hard.

b)He continues his work.

To me, sentence a is more common. And I am almost certain that sentence b is wrong. Thus, can anyone please give an example on how to use continue(other than using words like to,let, help.)

a)He survived the attack.

b)He survives.

Same thing. I never seen sentence b used in my entire life but according to the dictionary, survive means continue to live despite hardship or disaster.
