Good morning Eetl,

If you don't smoke, that's good for your health.

If you work in a bar, that's bad for your health.

I used 'but' to show the contrast between these two facts.

Consider sentences like

She was rich and unhappy.

She was rich but unhappy.

Both are correct grammar,

Hi Clive,

Shouldn't there be a hyphen between second and hand? I could not understand this sentence:

As a matter of fact, some statistics have suggested that people exposed to secondhand smoke get lung cancer at a rate double that for smokers.

Could you please throw some light on the above sentence?

Hi,

Shouldn't there be a hyphen between second and hand? Perhaps, but English writers tend to be rather flexible, generally speaking, on the topic of hyphens.

I could not understand this sentence:

As a matter of fact, some statistics have suggested that people exposed to secondhand smoke get lung cancer at a rate double that for smoker

I've found the following. It seems 'secondhand' is AmE, while 'second-hand' is BrE. (The first two are American English Dictionaries. The others are British English dictionaries.)
