Contender and competitor

Hi.

What is the difference with contender and competitor? Are they synonymous?

Because their verb forms are synonym. Contend(v)=compete

Thanks

I take a contender to be someone in sports (especially boxing) who has a good chance of winning a championship. A competitor is less specific - one of many contestants or opponents in any kind of endeavor, whether a television game or a business enterprise. CJ
