Contemporary

Hi,

Here's a passage from the book I'm reading
(Context: a budding writer is commenting on the work of another writer he recently met. The story is set in the early 50s.)

When his book was published we took the bus to Manhattan and bought two copies each. [...] I enjoyed his language, the brevity and terseness of his style. I believed I had found a contemporary, and we talked of how we would become the models of a new zeitgeist, the bold talent of a new literary age.

"contemporary" seems to be used in the sense of "like-minded spirit", but I haven't found this kind of meaning listed in the dictonaries. Could you please explain?

Thank you
H.
