"contain the situation"

Hi, I'm confused by this sentense:

"this is the best way to contain the situation"

What's the meaning of "contain the situation"? and what's the difference from "control the situation"?

Thanks a lot!

It's the same as 'control the situation', but suggests more strongly that the situation is out of control. To get a situation in hand that is currently out of hand.
