Contact lenses

I took a picture of a kind of contact lenses that I really liked and went somewhere else to see if I could find cheaper ones.

I say to the clerk at another optical store as I showed her the picture of the contact lenses:

I don't remember how much it is. Or

I don't remember how much it was.

Are both useable?

Thanks!

No, but the clerk asks me: What's the price for those? Or Asked me the cost of them at the other store.

I go:

I don't remember how much is it. Or

I don't remember how much was it.

Thanks!

Everybody's aware of this new and popular shopping technique -- especially clerks!

So what you're doing is trying to play innocent, right?

I'd use, "I don't remember how much it was."

This will serve your purpose, although the clerk will surely know you're lying.

Yes. I would say was if at the moment of the utterance I were recalling the experience of examining the lenses and seeing the price tag.

I need to be educated. I just can't conceive of taking a picture of a pair of contact lenses and showing it to someone, expecting the person to be able to identify them.
