Consturction of "so ~ that~"

Please look at the following sentences.

1.He's hurt so bad that I'm surprised he's still alive.
2.Hold down him so that he won't move!

No.2 sentence is normal to me. I can easily understand what it says. But no.1 sentence is not like that. Could you tell me whether it is grammatically correct?
And about the meaning of "so ~ that~", I've learned it indicates a purpose. For example, I can change no.2 sentence into the following.
How down him in order not (for him) to move.

But sometimes I've felt "that" in the construction of "so~ that~ " just indicates "and" or "so" in some sentences like no.1 sentence.
Could you tell me whether such my thought is right or not?

Thank you in advance for your teaching.
