Console in the fact that it came down to

How would you naturally phrase this? Is it correct to say “it came down/was to”?

I lost the cooking competition but I can console in the fact that it came/was down to a few details. He didn’t beat me easily.

It can down to how sophisticated the dishes were and his was a tad more sophisticated but both were equally good.

Thanks
