Consider quit or quitting

"I consider quitting smoking" sounds ok. But is "I consider to quit" equally common?

A catenative verb is one that can be followed by another verb: an infinitive or present participle.
You just have to memorize and practice which verbs can be followed by which forms.

I'm considering quitting smoking is the more useful sentence unless you add more to focus on the habitual nature of the considering:

I consider quitting smoking at least once a day.
