Conquer VS subdue

What is the difference between conquer and subdue?

Top answer

Perhaps to conquer is to vanquish, and to subdue is to suppress. I believe that in the first one, the object is more fully brought under control, or completely defeated/destroyed. In the second one, the object may easily regain its strength and vitality if the actor does not vigilantly maintain control.
