(a) The cat has white fur, brown spots and a tail.

I can't see much room for confusion either way. I would go for the first sentence, though. That way the tail is definitely a part of the cat and not of the fur.

I can't see much room for confusion either way. I would go for the first sentence, though. That way the tail is definitely a part of the cat and not of the fur.
