Connected.../flanks

Hi

Macklin (a general) was a superb infighter, connected in all the right ways, and a man who excelled at putting other people's necks at risk while protecting his own flanks with skillful dexterity

OK, I understand he was good at handling conflicts (infighter), he won these conflicts, but I'm not sure about the phrase "connected in all the right ways" and "flanks".

Hi, Macklin (a general) was a superb infighter, someone good at close-up and personal fighting. Here it doesn't sound like it refers to real combat. It refers to conflicts and disagreements with his close colleagues.

Hi

At first I thought that "flanks" here mean his own bottom? That is he protected himself?

Actually it's pretty strange. On the one hand it says he put other people's necks at risk and on the other he was good at protecting flanks.

But thanks, Clive!

Hi,

I hope you realize that 'his own flanks' here does not refer to the flanks of the army he commanded, but metaphorically to his own flanks, in the sense that he is 'an army' trying to advance his own personal career and avoid attacks on himself fom unexpected directions.
