Conjunctive

Hi, please help me.

‘“I believe that President Mubarak cares about his country. He is proud, but he is also a patriot,” Obama said.’

I don't understand why "but" is used. Is it impossible to use "and"?

Top answer

When someone is proud OF something, that's a good thing. I'm proud of my children, of the town's marching band at the Rose Bowl parade, of the good works my company does. When you just say someone is proud, without say proud of something, or proud that something is happening, it's not often considered a good thing.

  • When someone is proud OF something, that's a good thing.
  • I'm proud of my children, of the town's marching band at the Rose Bowl parade, of the good works my company does.
  • When you just say someone is proud, without say proud of something, or proud that something is happening, it's not often considered a good thing.
  • It implies that the person's ego or personal interests are more important than other factors.
  • So saying "He is proud" is not a complimentary thing to say.
