Conjunction or Preposition

..... having to play the third match lasting up to 120 minutes, U23 Vietnam continued to show the spirit of indomitable competition in the final match of 2018 AFC U-23 Championship.

A. Although
B. Instead of
C. Despite
D. In the event of

Considering the meaning and according to what I learned about English grammar, both A and C are acceptable:
1. Choose A -> we have a reduction of adverbial clause that has the same subject as main clause.
2. Choose C -> we have a prepositional phrase of concession.
But I wonder which is natural and is used more by native speakers.
Thank you.
