"I have been to China"
I would like to know how to change this to the Past Simple tense please.
"I was to China" does not sound correct to me, but "I was in China" cannot be correct because the preposition to has changed.

The verb 'is 'be', which is irregular. You can't conjugate 'been', because it is only the the past participle of 'be'.

That's not possible. This is an idiom that is only possible in the perfect tenses
I have been to ... / I had been to ...
and in the perfect participle and infinitive constructions
Having been to ... / ... to have been to ...
