Confusion in conditional sentence

Hi,

Is the following sentence is correct?

If I wanted to kill you, I would have killed you in L.A.

I think the above sentence should be like:

If had wanted to kill you, I would have killed you in L.A.

Am I correct?

English_Learner123 Am I correct? Yes, you are correct, but note that you will hear the simple past instead of the past perfect in this type of sentence. Some speakers make that substitution, especially when the verb is stative (does not express an action or event), like want, have, or be.
