Confusion between 'Adapt' and 'Adjust'

I looked up the meaning of these two words in the Oxford dictionary and found that they hardly had any differences.

Adapt : to change your behaviour in order to deal more successfully with a new situation

Adjust: to get used to a new situation by changing the way you behave and/or think

I wonder when to use 'adapt' and when to use 'adjust'. Please explain and give a clear example.

Thank you in advance

There's certainly overlap between them, but they're not always interchangeable. For example, You can adjust the seatbelt by lifting the metal buckle. ] The screenplay for the film was adapted from a famous Gorky novel.
