Confusion around in and on again

Are you supposed to say "I'm in Tenerife" or "I'm on Tenerife"?

Someone told me that it should be "I'm on Tenerife" because Tenerife is an island. Does that make sense?

Really? A search on Google for "in Tenerife" returns almost 5,000,000 results. A search for "on Tenerife" returns 327,000 results. Not doubting, just really confused.
