Confusion

Question

It is always confusing to use would in the sentences.Please clarify if any knows that where to use Would or where to use will.I think most of the people is suffering from the use this type of models in English as these model create ambiguity.

The basic functions of would are the habitual past, the future of the past, the past of 'will' in indirect speech, to express the hypothetical result of a conditional, whether explicit or not, and in wishes.

would - used to; had the habit of

One thing I remember about those times is that the Joneses would take a vacation every July.

would - the future of the past - like 'was/were going to'

After the climbers had reached base camp they would rest for a day. Later they would ascend to the peak.
Compare:
After the climbers have reached base camp they will rest for a day. Later they will ascend to the peak.

would - indirect speech - very much like the future of the past

Lucy will help us with the paper work.
Lucy said she would help us with the paper work.

would - hypothetical result of an explicit imagined situation, i.e., with an if-clause.

If I had a million dollars, I would buy a big house.

would - hypothetical result of an unexpressed or indefinite imagined situation

-- That would be great. (Imagine having pizza. Result: Great.)
