I come across a confusing sentence, it seems having two different understandings of it. i want to know which one is the correct answer.

my understanding:
36 years later, in the wake of his mother's death, Hemingway turned back to the adventure and tried to write a novel about it.
OR
his mother actually passed away 36 years ago, 36 years later, Hemingway turned back to the adventure and tried to write a novel about it.

your first sentence is better yet you use the phrase "in the...".so it is also baffling .i might say that.he knew that his mother died
