Confusing definitions

From Merriam-webster¹s 11th collegiate dictionary,

the definition of "aside from" has two meanings. It seems to me both definitions are contradictory or conflicting to each other.

One defintion includes something and the other excludes . The same story applies to " apart from". Is there anyone who can clarify the usage? Thanks in advance.
