Grammar

Confusing context

Hello everyone,

because it's christmas time I've decided to do a few grammar exercises on tenses. Unfourtunately as I was doing them, I found one sentence that puzzled me, namely:

Two days before he flew back to Sweden, we had a final meeting.

I would be very grateful if you were so kind as to explain me why the Simple Past is used in the second clause instead of the Past Perfect.
