Hi teachers! The following is from a book I study. What I wonder is why the choice (A) is the only wrong one. I think the choice (D) should be 'confusing'
"When you looked up the word cat, you probably found it (A)describing as a mammal of the family Felidae, or of the genus and species Felis catus. This taxonomic description indicates the boundaries (B)that differentiate cats from all other animals. The cat family includes oions and tigers as well as house cats, while a particular breed name distinguishes a Siameses from a Persian cat. The rules that govern this system of classification (C)are based on a science called taxonomy. This science, established by an international commission, enables us to know that agreements have been made to identify all plants and animals so that no two can(D)be confused."
As always, thank you so much!
Michelle Cha I think the choice (D) should be 'confusing' No. You are seeing a different use of "confuse" than the one you are used to. "to fail to differentiate from an often similar or related other - confuse money with comfort / Do not confuse the words 'flaunt' and 'flout'.

No, choice (D) is correct. To confuse is used as a transitive verb in the text, which is normal.

I agree that (A) sounds wrong. Try to read it the other way:
* You found the word cat describing as a mammal.
Using the continuous verb above doesn't sound correct. I think if they used the passive voice "described", it would be correct; it would fit the context better especially that there is the term "as

"Describing as" is not correct. Here are some alternatives:
