Confusing adverbs with adjectives

Hi all,

Not sure if I'm posting in the right forum but I have a question: we know what adverbs and adjectives are. However in the following sebtence:

I am sad.

Sad is an adjective but why isn't it an adverb since it is describing the state of the subject and thereby describing the verb "am"?

Top answer

dipzno1 why isn't it an adverb Precisely because it is describing the state of the subject (I) . It's not describing "am". "Am" is just a grammatically required element to link the subject with the adjective that describes it.
