Confusing

Hi,

I dont know which is correct in simple past:
He knew his friend was going to gamble well before anyone tempted him.
Is this right, or must I say: He knew ... anyone could tempt him. (or could have tempted him).

I feel the first one is simple but is it fine?

Confused,
