Confused is it "through" or "throughout"?

Which is correct please?

- There is no way I can stay awake throughout such a boring film.
- There is no way I can sit through a movie this boring.

I'd say both but how come the first one uses throughout and the second through?

Thank you

Thank you Avangi,

Could you use "through" for the first sentence?

May I ask you something I just came across, if you could please tell me

The brackets to make it easier to understand
Wait until everyone (who has heard you) has left to get up and leave.
Wait for everyone (who has heard you) to leave before getting up to leave yourself.

Thank you
