confused about the usage of "imagine"

Normally we use "Imagine that you are doing..." so I wrote "Imagine that you were living when the ancient Egyptians built the Pyramids."in my papers.
But my teacher crossed it out and she used "Imagine you had been living..." instead
Could you guys explain it for me please? Thanks a lot!

Yes,so write "Imagine that you are living when the ancient Egyptians built the Pyramids."
