i am confused about the sentence "the first thing i do is take a shower".
here 'i do' is attributive clause.so the main part is 'the first thing is take a shower'.so there are two verbs in the sentence "is and take".unacceptable.

Hi, yes, the "to" is usually left out in those constructions. It seems the verb "to do" plays an important role: The fist thing to do is check the tank. What you have to do is try not to despair.

Hi Kooyeen, thank you for your reply.
but you didn't reply my question in a direct way.
For your examples, the thing makes me confused is why do you not put a "to" between is and "do(check, try, try)".With what i have learned,i will write down the three sentences like this:
1.The first thing to do is to check the tank.(Subject:The first thing)
2.What you have to do is to try

The first thing I do is (to) take a shower.
The underlying sentence is I take a shower first.
This becomes the equative (What I do first) is (I take a shower).

This is a pseudo-cleft structure with do.
The grammar of this structure with do is a little different from the pseudo-cleft with other verbs.
