Confused

We would start a conversation with 'hi' to people when we met for the first time. We wouldn't straight talk on the matter.

I was told 'when we met' is wrong and 'when we meet' is correct? Why is that?

More information is needed about what you are trying to say, especially why you have used "would". If you are talking about habitual behaviour in the past then "met" is correct. "to people" does not work well for me.
