Confused?

Which choice should I pick for the following:

The age and sex of a patient ( causes, causes) variation in the normal range of laboratory values.

should I use cause or causes?

thanks everyone for your help.

I'd go with "cause" as there are two things, age and ***, therefore the plural form of verb is needed.

I agree with you . But I also read that if 2 or more things are considered as one , we should use singular verb like this sentence:
Egg and milk is my favorite meal for breakfast.
What do you think?

I would have sworn you would have preferred dry fish! Lol. You always make me laugh. d: I hate you for that.

What do you mean by that? You don't agree with me? If not, tell me why :-o

Intuitively I do but rationally I need more details, more explanations.

is egg and milk a well known pairing, then?
I guess I could say bacon and egg IS my fave breakfast...

but I'm not sure the example of original pair is so established as to be considered as a single unit with single verb ending to match.

The principle of 'notional concord' explains the following:

"The hammer and sickle WAS flying from the flagpole."
"Danish bacon and eggs MAKES a good solid English breakfast."
"The Bat and Ball SELLS good beer."

David, care to be a bit more explicit, please?

Thanks,
