confidential and secret

Once your child is diagnosed with AD/HD, it is important to let the school know so that they can provide appropriate academic and social support. Your child's school should keep this information confidential and it can usually make accommodations in the classroom to fit your child's learning needs.

First, I wonder if I can use "secret" to replace "confidential" here without making any difference in meaning.

Second, how should I rephrase "make accommodations?" Is it "make adaptation/adjustment?" Thanks.

Hi Angliholic, Taking your second question first, yes, your understanding is correct. "Confidential" can be replaced by "private" in this case, but "confidential" is the best word. Confidential information should be proteced from public disclosure, and revealed only to people who have a need for it - like teachers, the school nurse, etc.

  • "Secret" information applies more readily to the military or to corporate secrets, not to personal information, which is considered confidential.
  • In the military and in corporations, they are actually defined differently, requiring a different level of "clearance" to see it, and requiring different levels of protection for how such information is stored, with secret being the higher level.
